LinkedIn is a powerful platform for small business owners, but many profiles and company pages don’t make the most of the opportunities available. Whether you’re using LinkedIn to find new clients, partners, or employees, it’s important to stand out in the right way. Here are the top five LinkedIn mistakes small business owners make on personal profiles that I’ve seen, and how you can fix them today.
Fix: Turn your headline into a brief sentence that shows the value you bring. For example, instead of “Managing Director at Smith & Co.,” try “Helping small businesses increase efficiency through custom operations solutions.”
Fix: Write your summary as if you’re explaining your work to a potential client. Highlight what you do, who you help, and why you’re passionate about it. Keep it conversational and authentic.
Fix: End your summary with a CTA, such as “Feel free to connect with me if you’d like to discuss [specific topic]” or “Visit [website link] to learn more about how I can help your business grow.”
Fix: Ask your clients or colleagues to write you a recommendation. To make it easy for them, suggest specific points they could mention, like how you solved a particular problem for them.
Fix: If your current photo is outdated or doesn’t align with your professional brand, it’s time for an update. Invest in a headshot if possible, or take a well-lit, friendly photo yourself. (My photo’s need updating as they are very old, but don’t follow my bad influence in this topic!)!
By avoiding these common mistakes, you can ensure that your LinkedIn profile is working for you and attracting the right opportunities. Take a few minutes today to update one or more of these areas—you’ll be surprised by the difference it can make!
